Get Back Into Climbing: From 2013 onwards

This scheme is run in partnership with Team Beds & Luton. The Get Back Into project is for people who are 16 or older and want to start playing sport again, or take up a more active lifestyle, with others like themselves. Sessions are relaxed and fun, led by experienced coaches and instructors, and are a gentle introduction back into the activity. Team Beds & Luton have run over 100 different Get Back Into sessions to date, and have seen nearly 2,000 people start playing sport or being more physically active again.

Zest for Adventure runs the wall climbing programme in the Get Back Into scheme, and the activity aims to offer something a bit different for people who enjoy being physically active and want to challenge themselves on a variety of climbing routes.

As with all Get Back Into events, this activity is suitable for adults of all ages and abilities. The next programme will be based at Kempston Outdoor Centre and will run on Thursday evenings from 7.00 to 9.00 pm. It will comprise eight sessions and will start on Thursday 28 January 2010. The cost of the course is subsidised by Team Beds & Luton and offers terrific value for money at just £40.00 per person for the eight weeks. Bookings are made through Team Beds & Luton, and the course must be paid for in advance as this programme has proved very popular, and numbers are limited.

At the end of the eight weeks, participant will be offered a variety of opportunities to put their new skills into practice. These will include trips to the Peak District to try climbing and abseiling on real rock. There will also be regular group trips to local indoor and outdoor climbing walls.

The syllabus for the course includes:

• Introduction to climbing walls

• Warming up

• Selecting and inspecting safety equipment: helmets, harnesses, ropes, slings, belay devices and

karabiners

• Different knots and tying into the rope

• Different belay devices and techniques of belaying

• Climbing calls

• Lowering off

• Bouldering and spotting

• Movement skills

• Climbing wall hazards

By the time they have completed the course, participants should be sufficiently proficient in the basic skills of climbing to be confident and competent to climb independently.
